The year has started out with a lot
excitement and hope. Our annual Vision
Setting Meeting was a success that has led to a new priorities in our
Goals for 2007and has already spawned some plans of action. Besides
the regular fare of events, the Season of
Nonviolence offers many valuable and affordable ways to manifest Peace
in our world. The Women in Black make a "stand" for Peace and Nonviolence on the first and third Thursdays of the month. The first Thursday, February 1st, they will stand from 12:15 to 12:45pm at N.E. corner of Dana Dr. and Churn Creek Rd. in Redding. The third Thursday, February 15th, they "stand" from 5:30 to 6:00pm at the Shasta County Administrative Center, 1450 Court St. Redding. "The Great Turning: From Empire to Global Community", the book by David Korten featured last month in the CRG Book Discussion Group has "spawned" a continuing action group headed up by Betty and Do Doty. They will be meeting at their home, 6899 Riatta Dr., Redding, on February 6th at 7:00pm. Anyone interested in moving toward some alternatives to our current cultural and economic morass might find some other like minded people to pursue those aspirations with. Join Sue Miller-Born for a day outdoors in Lassen Park. Rent your own equipment; there is a park fee of $15. If the unusually warm and dry weather continues, simply bring hiking shoes (and other warm clothing!). Spend a day outdoors comtemplating Peace. Bring that energy home and create peace. Doug Milhous will lead the group in the study based on Marshall Rosenberg's work, "A Language of Life". We will be discussing Chapter 10 -- "Expressing Anger Fully". The CRG Book Discussion Group will be meeting at the Unitarian Universalists Hall, Suite 611 of the Hilltop Professional Building on February13th, 6:30-8:30pm. The current selection is "Overblown: How Politicians and the Terrorism Industry Inflate National security Threats and Why We Believe Them by John Mueller . "Mueller explores three themes: terrorist threats are overblown; we can learn from the lessons of previous international threats that they are often exaggerated; and by applying these lessons, we can create policy that reduces fear and the cost of overreaction." The Peace and Justice Center holds a Peace Vigil in front of City Hall, 777 Cypress Ave., Redding, on the second and the last Saturday of every month, February 10th and February 24th, from 10:00am to 11:00am. Bring your poetry, stories and lyrics to Open Mic, Wednesday, February 14th, at 7:00pm. Make an artistic statement of your own or come and appreciate the contributions of others. Always fun! On Friday, February 16th, Open Floor! at 7:30pm in Old City Hall. The Open! format is extended to musician, dancers, actors, mimes, drummers and hummers (no wild animal acts, please). The Traveling Bohemians ! Call 229-7818 Shasta College has a series of foreign films each semester as part of their Humaities Program. They are always interesting and insightful. On February 16th at 7pm, in Room 802, the Palestinian film, Paradise Now, will be shown. This is a documentary about two suicide bombers in the occupied territories: Their thoughts, doubts, hopes and fears. Admission is free. CRG will sponsor "Examining the War on Terror: A Civil Community Discussion" on Friday, February 23rd, 7:00pm at the Spiritual Enrichment Center, 1905 Hartnell ave., Redding, CA. This promises to be an very interesting discussion with a diverse group of community leaders like Dugan Barr, Dr. Joe Busey, Bob Googins, Columnist Bob Williams, Parker Pollock and others. The moderated debate about the value and effects of the "War on Terror" will give listeners a chance to hear different views on this dominant issue of our times. The event is free and all are encouraged to come. Questions will be taken from the audience after the moderated portion of the discussion. It is free and open to the public. Genocide No More -- Save Darfur of Redding will be sponsoring another "I Stand with Darfur" March on February 23rd. The march will start at the Courthouse on Court St., Redding at 4:00pm and proceed to Redding City Hall where there will be an Interfaith Prayer Vigil. From there the March will proceed to Wally Herger's office where his representative, Dave Muerer, will be given petitions gathered to stop the genocide.
