Community Radio in Redding!

Some of you are aware that there is a unique opportunity for Redding area progressives: Community Radio!! Thanks to some forward looking members of CRG and the good folks at People of Progress there is a very good chance that we will be able to have one of the radio frequencies available in the Redding area. Here is what Amy Goodman of Democracy Now had to say about this opportunity:

“This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity. The Federal Communications Commission will open a one-week window, Oct. 12-19, during which nonprofit community groups in the U.S. can file applications.
Think for a moment what a powerful, noncommercial radio station could do in your community. As the late George Gerbner, dean of the Annenberg School for Communication, said, we need a media not run by “corporations that have nothing to tell and everything to sell, that are raising our children today.”

CRG already did the preliminary study last year and has quietly raised enough to get the application process started. An engineer has been hired ($1800 already funded) to complete the technical portion of the process. It appears that an attorney will be needed also to make sure the rest of the paperwork is in order and we have located one to do that. People of Progress have agreed to be the applicant as their history and long term commitment to the community will increase our chances of getting the frequency.
On top of all this good fortune, a unanimous supporter has agreed to match any donation we get to support the Community Radio project. This is where you come in. To make this opportunity a reality, to have a truly independent community radio station based in Redding will take another approximately $1500 from CRG supporters. These donations will have to be sent to POP and designated “for Community Radio”. No amount is too small, and remember: IT WILL BE DOUBLED!
